CYCLING IN GIRONA
The Ca l’Espardenyer apartments in Banyoles are ideal for those who want to go cycling, because in Girona there is a whole network of Greenways and a circular routecross-border called Pirinexus, which allow you to discover the territory on two wheels.
The Greenways are old railway sections with no use and no traffic for motorized vehicles, adapted for cycling or walking and accessible to everyone. The Greenways they are an excellent option to enjoy nature and discover small villages with lots of charm in a relaxed way. Here are some suggestions:
- Ruta del Ferro i del Carbó. A placid route of 15 kilometers between Ripoll and Sant de les Abadesses evoked by the industrial past of the area. You can take a walk in the town of Ripoll, surrounded by mountains and with one of the most Romanic monuments of Catalonia: the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll from the ninth century.
- Carrilet Route. The first stretch, 57 kilometers, connects Olot and Girona, therefore begins in the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa and go trough the valley of the Ter river and arrival in the Devesa of Girona. The second section, 40 kilometers, goes from Girona to the coastal town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols. This Greenway allows you to discover the medieval legacy of Olot and the fantastic Old Town of Girona.
- Petit Train Route, the only greenway on the Costa Brava. Very popular in summer because joins Palafrugell and Palamós and has a branch that goes to Platja de Castell, a idyllic landscape with the archeological remains of an Iberian settlement. The layout of 6 Kms, almost without slope, runs through the so-called Empordanet ,and allow you to know the old fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell and their coves, one of the most beautiful and photogenic corners of the Costa Brava, as well as the town of Palamós and its port with the interesting Fisheries Museum.
Pirinexus is a circular route that connects the Girona region with French Catalonia , combining paths of greenways, country roads and low traffic roads with a more demanding orography and sections that are not accessible to everyone. The Pirinexus route is divided into 6 stages of different lengths that cover very different landscapes: forests, vineyards, fields of rice and apple trees, as well as small medieval villages and even Roman remains. Also cross or pass near cities and towns that you can not miss as Camprodon, Ripoll, Olot, Girona, L'Escala, Sant Martí d'Empúries, Torroella de Montgrí, Peratallada, Pals, Calella de Palafrugell, Prats de Molló or Ceret.
